About Joseph Lowe
Norman Joseph Lowe, Jr. was born in 1947 in Key West, Florida. From a young age, he showed a passion for music and started taking piano lessons at the age of seven. In 1970, he earned his Music degree from the University of Miami.
Throughout his life, Joe has been an accompanist for various choirs and ensembles. He worked with the Navy’s Fleet Sonar School Choir in the early 1970s and served as Organist & Choirmaster for St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Key West from 1970 to 2013. In 1974, he became Choir Director at Peace Covenant Presbyterian Church and held that position until 2019. Over the years, Joe has written over 1,000 musical arrangements of choral and instrumental music for a variety of instrumentations.
In 2019, Joe began worshipping at Key West United Methodist “Old Stone” Church where he met organist, Dr. Ann McFarland. The two became fast friends and have performed many piano and organ duets together – both in concert as well as during weekly worship services.
About Dr. Ann McFarland
Ann McFarland was born and raised in Pennsylvania, where she began her musical training at the age of 8 on the piano and at 13 on the organ. She served as organist and choir director of numerous churches in Pennsylvania over the years.
Ann earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano from Susquehanna University. Later, she completed her Master of Music degree in Music History from Temple University. Then, Dr. McFarland received her Ph.D. in Music Education from Temple.
After a distinguished career as a music educator at West Chester University of Pennsylvania (where she taught music education, coordinated student teaching and field placement for music education, and directed the graduate Orff-Schulwerk program), Ann retired in the summer of 2015 and moved to Key West. There she joined Keys Choral Arts as a singer-soprano and became a founding member of the Southernmost Chamber Music Society.
Dr. McFarland serves as organist and director of the children’s choir at Key West United Methodist “Old Stone” Church, where she often plays duets with Joe Lowe. She also teaches private piano lessons in her home.
